Beer Spotlight: Spiteful Malevolence

BEER: Malevolence
BREWER: Spiteful Brewing, Chicago
STYLE: Russian Imperial Stout
ABV: 10.5%
BACKGROUND: Like most professional brewers, Spiteful’s Brad Shaffer and Jason Klein earned their chops through years of home brewing. In the spring of 2012, they worked with fellow home brewers, Carlos Rosales (Corazon) and Adrian Vidaurre (DryHop), to brew this Russian Imperial Stout. It was brewed with a variety of American and English base malts, a high amount of specialty grains, including Special B, and a heavy addition of Piloncillo sugar (a dark brown sugar used in Mexican cuisine) bought at a local bodega.
AVAILABILITY: This stout can be found in a limited number of 22oz. bombers in select Chicagoland liquor stores. Once those are gone, you probably won’t see it again until 2014. The last keg will be tapped at Four Moon Tavern on Friday, May 17, for the Spiteful Tap Tower Takeover. Click here for details on the event.
